I'm a military brat. I know packing. I know moving. But this is a whole new ballgame.
There are no UHauls where you can just put everything in boxes and put it in. But there are customs taxes/fees on everything you are able to bring in.
How do you decide what to take, sell, and get rid of when you can only fit things in the back of a truck and a small trailer?
1. How big is it? Well, that pretty much eliminates all the furniture.
2. Do we really need it? That eliminates everything related to babies and cold weather... and then, the "If I don't take this, would I need to buy one there or would I not miss it enough?"
3. Do we need all of them? Had to pick my favorite Crock-Pot... and my favorite a-lot-of-things.
4. How much would it be to buy there? Electronics in Mexico are always more expensive, usually around 30% more than there are here. Which means, we are making space for them.
And then, you enlist your experienced movers/packers to help you deal with it all. Mom helped sort and pack all week. Rachel and Jorge helped move and pack on the busiest days. Matt helped us get a large trailer to borrow so we could get out of the house on time. Sunshine watched the girls two days so they could have fun and be out of the way and let her kids have a yard sale with a bunch of the stuff (Those homeschoolers, they find all kind of strange things fun to try. *wink*). It took another week and a half to sort the 'miscellaneous' boxes and even all of that is not 100% done. I will have to do that when I come back next year... sorry Mom!
And you need a Papi 'like-a-jigsaw' packer to get all that stuff in. And just because it fits doesn't mean it won't be too heavy of a load. And then close your eyes when you see what doesn't fit and just let it go. As I already know, material things don't matter as much as being free, and happy, and together.
